A Relatively Simple Idea

If people are good only because they fear punishment, and hope for reward, then we are a sorry lot indeed.
-Albert Einstein

It seems only right that for the first quote wednesday we take a look at one of the greatest minds of the twentieth Century.

Albert Einstein was born in Ulm, Germany on March 14, 1879. Even when he was young he was interested in Science. As everyone knows, this had a huge influence on his later life and career.

He is probably best known for his General Theory of Relativity, but he also had many insightful things to say. As shown in the quote above, he had a very particular idea of how someone should act.

While I don't agree with everything that Einstein had to say, I do like this quote. Why is it that we only act good in situations where, if we don't, we will be punished? It really shouldn't be like that. People should act good for the reason that it is the right thing to do, not simply because of the repercussions if the don't do what they should.

I feel like this is often overlooked by so many people. For teachers it is easy to spot the people who act well because it is simply in their nature, and the people who only act well if they are threatened with an unsavory punishment. Is it right? No, but it is what is accepted by many people.

Einstein was a brilliant mind. He did a lot of good and had a lot of good things to say. He shared his wisdom with the world because he thought that he could help make it better. He didn't have to be asked to share these pieces of wisdom, he gave them freely because he thought that it was what was best for everyone.
